13/01/2023 Coins, Medals & Banknotes
Coins, medals and banknotes are always in demand by collectors, investors and also for gifts. However, their quality and rarity are important factors in determining their value, so holiday change and old well-worn English pennies are unlikely to be of interest.
Gold and silver coins are usually the most sought after. American silver and gold dollar coins, English gold sovereign and silver crowns, and older Irish pre-decimal coins and modern Central Bank collector coins are all very desirable
Early GAA medals, together with large Irish agricultural and college medals and French art medals are very saleable. Military medals especially British WWI, WWII and Irish War of Independence attract specialist collectors.
Banknote collecting has become increasingly popular in recent years. The Irish Lady Lavery and Ploughman series together with Northern Irish and early twentieth century British banknotes are of particular interest. However European banknotes from the pre-Euro years and holiday change may not have any value.
A careful examination by our in-house Numismatist, of your collections and other accumulations of coins and banknotes, might well reveal the odd treasure or two. Earlier this year a collection of Lady Lavery warcode £1 banknotes sold for over €6,000 at auction.
