What is Numismatics? Numismatics is the study and collection of coins – as well as medals and banknotes. It encompasses an understanding of history, political developments, along with the rise and fall of nations and empires. Coins, medals and banknotes are always in demand by collectors and investors and for gifts.
Gold and silver coins are usually the most sought after. American silver and gold dollar coins, English gold sovereign and silver crowns and older Irish pre-decimal coins and modern Central Bank collector coins are all very desirable however, their quality and rarity are important factors in determining their value
Early GAA medals, together with large Irish agricultural and college medals and French art medals are very saleable. Military medals especially British WWI, WWII and Irish War of Independence attract specialist collectors.
Banknote collecting has become increasingly popular in recent years. The Irish Lady Lavery and Ploughman series together with Northern Irish and early twentieth century British banknotes are of particular interest.
A careful examination by our in-house Numismatist, of your collections and other accumulations of coins and banknotes, might well reveal the odd treasure or two. For instance, an 1887 Queen Victoria Jubilee cased set of 9 gold and silver coins sold for €4,500 at auction last year.
